Wafa Maraaoui, general manager of a private company active in the transport and collection of (non-hazardous) waste from ships and oil companies, revealed that the company has been stopped for 86 days from continuing its activities and even admission to the commercial port of Sfax. Maraaoui told Tunisie Numérique, that “We are operating in a legal manner, though since September 25, 2021, the general manager of the commercial port of Sfax has issued a circular relating to the prohibition on our activities (…). Currently, tons of waste are tossed into the sea. It is a actual threat to the region and to public health. ” she lamented.
She added, “We have four trucks packed with the garbage that are still stranded. The workers of the company were no longer working (…). We are faced with many problems especially of a financial nature. We have made diligent efforts to find a solution, but alas (…). We call on the Ministry of the Environment and the relevant authorities to intervene as soon as possible… ”she said.
