The Criminal Court specializing in financial corruption cases at the Tunis Court of First Instance convicted two workers of the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM) to six years in prison each.
This decision furthermore includes a fine for charges linked to embezzlement of public funds.
The case documents show that an inspection carried out by CNAM supervisory authorities in one of its centers at the end of 2022 revealed a revenue deficit. After extensive inquiries, it was found that two employees were involved in the misappropriation of these funds.
Judicial authorities were immediately notified, which led to the detention of the suspects.
The court ruled that the two employees had abused their positions to appropriate funds entrusted to them as part of their duties. As a result, they were condemned to six years in prison each, in addition to a fine to compensate for the financial losses suffered by the CNAM.
This case highlights the significance of regular monitoring and auditing in public institutions to prevent corruption and abuse of power.
