The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) condemned what it called “multiple police violence” lately perpetrated against journalists, cautioning against any try to break the media or violate the press freedom.
The warning comes against the backdrop of Wednesday’s assault against a team of journalists operating for the El-Hiwar Ettounsi outside the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) headquarters in Bardo.
According to a SNJT press release , a team of journalists from the EL-Hiwar Ettounsi were abruptly and arbitrarily assaulted and arrested by police officers. The SNJT did not give details of the circumstances of the incident or the motives for the arrest.
Besides, the union called on the President of the Republic to shoulder his responsibilities in shielding journalists against these violations, considered “serious,” especially as he is the guarantor of rights and freedoms according to the Constitution provisions.
