Tunisia-SOS Children’s Villages director calls for consideration of project to organize placement of children with receiving families

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, National Director of SOS Children Villages in Tunisia Ashraf Saidi, reported on Friday, February 23, 2024, that a parliamentary delegation visited to learn about the services provided by the Tunisian Association of SOS Villages and to examine legislative support mechanisms.

Saidi underscored that the visit served as a chance to showcase the services presented by the villages and the current beneficiary count, which stands at around 3,300 children and youth. These people receive around 205 types of services and care, supported by an annual budget of 21 million dinars.

Saidi also examined the Reception Families Project, initiated between 2015 and 2017, which concluded with the drafting of specifications. Despite these efforts, the lack of a law to formally regulate this initiative has resulted in a strain on existing childcare institutions and integrated centres.

The conversation with the MPs centred on the proposal of a draft law to ease the placement of children with host families, rather than in institutional care settings.
