Tunisia-Speculation and consumer rush are driving commodity shortages

Tunis Regional Trade Director Maher Ghribi told Tunisie Numérique that the authorities concerned are battling monopoly and speculation. Ghribi reassured citizens regarding the availability of basic goods, highlighting that there is no shortage.

According to him, the intense demand for basic necessities, the monopoly and the eagerness of citizens were behind their unavailability on the market, particularly in supermarkets. The official even said that citizens have bought stocks of basic food products for fear of shortages. Concerning the management of products seized by economic control units, Ghribi clarified that the confiscated quantity will be injected into legal distribution channels while those implicated will appear in court.
