The President of the Tunisian Organisation of Young Doctors, Wajih Dhokkar, confirmed the success of the strike (over 90%) led by young doctors in all university hospitals and medical faculties across the country on Monday, April 21, 2025.
He said, in an interview with a private radio station, that some young doctors had been subjected to arbitrary treatment and threatened with the rejection of their internships because of the strike, as was the case in the cardiology department at Habib Thamer Hospital, according to him.
He stressed that the demands put forward by the young doctors have been ongoing for years and are not new. The organisation was forced to call for the strike due to the lack of response and commitment from the relevant authorities.
The President of the Tunisian Organisation of Young Doctors pointed out that the demands mainly concern the payment of on-call quotas for young doctors, noting that some back payments for young doctors in hospitals date back to 2018.
Dhokkar clarified that there are issues with the payment of on-call hours (up to 70 hours per week) in about 60 percent of hospitals.
He also called for an increase in the hourly wage for on-call hours, which currently ranges from 1 to 3 dinars per hour.
During the strike, emergency services continued to operate at full capacity.
