Secretary General of the Tunisian General LaboUr Union (UGTT) Noureddine Taboubi met Thursday U.S. Undersecretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Ezra Zia, who is visiting Tunisia, the UGTT announced in a statement. The meeting focused on the political, economic and social situation in Tunisia and ways to support the democratic experience. On this occasion, Taboubi stressed UGTT’s openness to reform, noting that this position has been expressed by the labour organisation to all governments, “provided that the sacrifices are shared among all parties and they do not affect the country’s stability,» he added. The Secretary General of the UGTT said the current situation requires the support of Tunisia’s friends to get out of the difficult political, economic and social situation. For her part, the U.S. Under-Secretary praised the role played by the UGTT during the period before independence to defend the national issues. Ezra Zia stressed the historical relationship between Tunisia and the United States. She reiterated the U.S. administration’s respect for the right to organise, human rights, freedom of expression and public and individual freedoms and democracy. The Under Secretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights is currently visiting Tunisia as part of a tour in the region, the U.S. Embassy in Tunis announced Wednesday. |
