Tunisia to Exempt Certain Imported Medicines from Customs Duties and VAT

The 2025 Finance Bill has introduced a new measure for the pharmaceutical sector, exempting certain medications imported by the Tunisian Central Pharmacy from customs duties and VAT. This exemption will apply to medicines that have a locally manufactured equivalent, beginning from January 1, 2025.

Currently, these imported medicines are subject to a 30% customs duty and a 7% VAT. The purpose behind lowering the cost of importing these medicines is to improve Central Pharmacy’s liquidity and help it meet its financial obligations with foreign suppliers.

The Central Pharmacy plays a vital role in regulating the local pharmaceutical market, ensuring that medicines are priced lower than their import costs. Nevertheless, the current taxes and duties have strained its financial stability, sometimes leading to supply disruptions.
