Tunisia – Towards Reforming Expropriation Provisions for Public Utility

The Minister of State Properties and Real Estate Affairs, Wajdi Al-Hedhili, presided over a working session today, Monday, attended by a representative from the Ministry of Equipment and Housing and several officials from the Ministry of State Properties and Real Estate Affairs. The meeting sought to explore the possibility of revising the expropriation law issued by Decree No. 65 of 2022, which complements and amends Law No. 53 of 2016.

On this occasion, the minister affirmed that the ministry’s services are currently examining legislation related to expropriation for public utility. The purpose is to introduce greater flexibility and transparency in the expropriation process while ensuring adherence to principles of justice and fairness in compensation. This approach seeks to safeguard the rights of beneficiaries while expediting the release of real estate properties.

The ultimate dream is to eliminate obstacles hindering the implementation of public projects and to advance development efforts in the country, according to a statement published on the ministry’s official page.
