Tunisia-Tunisia celebrates the 84th anniversary of Martyrs’ Day

Tunisia today marks the 84th anniversary of the events of April 9, 1938.

This day remembers the Tunisians who were killed when French troops suppressed nationalist demonstrations in 1938.

On April 9th 1938, thousands of protesters thronged Tunis to demand the creation of a Tunisian parliament.

Several activists sacrificed their lives in the service of the country during two demonstrations that took place to put an end to the colonial system. These two events witnessed the participation of Tunisian women for the first time in the country’s history. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people were imprisoned that day and sent back to military tribunals, while 22 Tunisians fell as martyrs. Hundreds of injuries were recorded and nearly a thousand arrests.
