Tunisia-Tunisia hosts FAO Symposium on improving water productivity in agriculture

Tunisia hosted on Wednesday the Regional Symposium on Improving Water Productivity in Agriculture in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, reported The TAP agency.The three-day conference was launched and promptly initiated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Several researchers, young innovators, policymakers and specialists in the scientific area participated in the conference to address the state of water productivity in the region, the hurdles confronting the agricultural sector and the convenient solutions.

The local convention is the first gathering of the “Collaborative Platform on Water Productivity” of the Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity for the NENA region.
“No other region has been as affected by desertification as the NENA region,” TAP quoted Philippe Ankers, subregional coordinator for North Africa and FAO representative in Tunisia, as saying.

According to Ankers, it will be crucial to respond rapidly to engage the triple hurdle of sustainable management of waterclimate change, food security and nutrition.

The FAO representative requested on specialists, policymakers and young innovators to provide effectively “to the way that we use water in the short, medium and long term,” hoping the collaborative platform created by FAO could facilitate this process.
