Tunisia-Tunisian Society of Astronomy shares details regarding Eid al-Adha date[Video]

A source from the Tunisian Society of Astronomy noted today, Thursday, June 6, 2024, that the astronomical conditions required to observe the crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah include the following: the crescent must be observed after conjunction, particularly after one hour and 38 minutes. Further, the crescent should be more than 5 degrees above the horizon and must be at an arc angle of more than 8 degrees away from the sun.

Speaking with  Tunisie Numérique, the same source added that despite the lack of these astronomical data, not only in Tunisia but in multiple locations in the Islamic and Arab world.

Concerning the date of Eid al-Adha, our speaker said that it is associated with Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which follows the Umm al-Qura calendar. This calendar stipulates that the month begins as soon as the crescent moon is sighted. The speaker remarked that since Eid al-Adha is also associated with the Day of Arafat, the data show that tomorrow, June 7th, will be the first day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, and June 16th will be the first day of Eid al-Adha.

He emphasised that for Tunisia, the Astronomy Society provides all data to the Mufti of the Republic, who is legally and constitutionally authorized to reveal the date of Eid al-Adha.
