Tunisia- UTICA calls for activating state of economic emergency

The Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts” UTICA called in a statement on Tuesday for the need “to activate a state of economic emergency in order to protect economic sovereignty and protect the national economic fabric”.

This call comes in light of the unprecedented economic contraction recorded in Tunisia in the second quarter of 2020, which topped 21% and the number of unemployed increased by 100,000, bringing the unemployment rate to 18% of the total labor force.

In the same press release, the Union also called for “working to create new conditions conducive to the recovery of the economy by accelerating major economic reforms and taking all necessary measures to stimulate regional development and support all sectors. economic, especially the most fragile ”, as well as“ continue to approve charters of vital sector systems and reform the exchange law, address the black economy and integrate what could be incorporated into the formal sector ”.

The employers’ organization considered that “the option of forming a government of independent competences is the best option imposed by the current circumstances to begin to face the current difficult and complex situations far from the calculations and narrow quotas”.

It expressed deep concern at this decline and the gravity of the situation and its repercussions on the viability of the national economy, as well as on the stability of the country.
