Tunisia- UTICA ready to cooperate with prime minister Hichem Mechichi’s government

The Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA) said Wednesday that the main priorities defined by the government of Hichem Mechichi constitute a basis for dialogue to establish a “consensual” recovery programme that brings together all national forces, expressing its readiness to collaborate with this new government.

The government of Hichem Mechichi won the confidence of the parliament with 134 votes for, 67 against and no abstentions out of a total of 201 deputies present.

The new Prime Minister undertook to place investment, fiscal justice, public sector reform, fight against poverty and the rebalancing of public finances at the top of his priorities.

In a press release issued at the end of this plenary session, the UTICA underlined the need to give top priority to preserving the sustainability of businesses and jobs, boosting investment and stepping up exports and regional development.

The employers’ organisation also called for the establishment of a sustainable development model and the development of precarious economic sectors.

It also stressed the need to reform the exchange code, encourage scientific research and innovation, develop the renewable energy sector and fight against the parallel economy.

The implementation of these reforms, the UTICA specifies, requires “courageous” decisions and a “clear-sighted” vision.

Furthermore, the confederation urged the new government to complete the establishment of constitutional institutions and authorities, including the Constitutional Court, and to revise the electoral code and the law on the financing of political parties.
