Kerkennah mayor (Governorate of Sfax), Moncef Fakir, regretted that most projects are on hold such as the creation of a bridge joining the eastern and western part of the island.
According to him, the project contractor protests about the collapse of the state to pay budget allocations.
He reminded journalists in a statement that transportation problem is a nagging problem, remarking that the acquisition of a new boat made since 2016 has not yet materialized.
Moncef Fakir emphasised that the municipality does not have sufficient financial resources, lamenting that it does not raise taxes from companies based on the island like Petrofac.
He pointed out that among the projects to achieve a port for the transport of hydrocarbons which is currently carried out in the tourist area which represents a dilemma and proffers risks given that the vessels carry condensate and in the event of an accident this could cause disaster.
Referring to the new budget, the mayor of Kerkennah declared that the state has provided support of 1 million dinars, which is little opposed to the island’s needs.
He recalled the dreams of the inhabitants of the island to make plans and achieve self-sufficiency as well as to overcome this isolation from which the islanders suffer.
