Tunisia-“Waste imported from Italy”: Customs and ministry involved, according to administrative investigation

it is unquestionably one of the most notable environmental scandals in the history of Tunisia. The matter of importing waste from Italy proceeds to generate many headlines.

This Tuesday, December 15, 2020, the chairman of the parliamentary commission on administrative reform and the fight against corruption, Badreddine Gammoudi, asserts that the administrative inquiry launched by the Ministry of Finance validates the involvement of the of Local Affairs and the environment and customs services in this corruption case.

Speaking to Shems FM, he stated that the expulsion of the director of the national waste management agency is simply a scapegoat to cover up this affair and silence public opinion.

Referring to the involvement of Customs, he replied that some customs services have attempted to provide a certain classification to this waste to help the import operation.

Mr Gammoudi, said he was not persuaded by the explanations of the Minister of Local Affairs and the Environment in this case.

“The minister tried to present a scapegoat without raising suspicions within his department,” he said after a hearing on November 9, 2020.
