The city of Sousse was selected, among several cities in the world, to participate in the implementation in the municipality, of the application “Waste Wise Cities Tool”.
Established in 2017, with 24 representatives of African countries, the Ministry of Environment of Japan (MoEJ), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the city of Yokohama, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Waste Wise City Tool is a platform for sharing knowledge and good practices as well as promoting investments for waste management in Africa.
This application will help identify policy and infrastructure gaps for improved Solid Waste Management as part of the activities of the “African Clean Cities Platform” (ACCP) for the period May to September 2021.
The city of Sousse joined the two programs in April 2021.
The event will serve to introduce the Waste Wise Cities (WaCT) tool with all partners and discuss the best ways, such as a survey, that can help participating cities solve their solid waste management challenges and the type of stakeholders that should be involved in the process to have a tangible impact.
The launch of this tool in Sousse in Tunisia will be done simultaneously with the municipality of Dakar in Senegal and Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC.
The UN-Habitat Office in Tunisia will provide technical support and capacity building for the implementation of the WaCT tool application through the African Clean Cities Platform in Sousse, and to promote a sustainable solid waste management system in the city and support it in project development.
