Tunisia-Zaghouan: Regularization of situation of little girl who remained without gender details in civil status registers

Zaghouan Governor Mohamed El Euch confirmed, in an interview with a private radio station on Thursday, December 14, 2023, the resolution of the situation concerning a young girl whose gender was inadvertently omitted by the civil status officer at the time of birth. President Kais Saied had addressed this issue in a statement on Wednesday.

Expressing gratitude to the head of state for intervening and rectifying what he termed an “oversight,” the governor stated, “By contacting the services of the Presidency of the Republic, we learned that the situation was fixed.”

Providing further details, Governor El Euch disclosed that a resident of the Siliana governorate, residing in a Zaghouan delegation, gave birth to a girl on February 5, 2016, in a public hospital in Tunis. The child was subsequently registered in a Tunis commune. However, the omission of the child’s gender went unnoticed by her parents until she turned six, the age at which she was to be enrolled in primary school.

Upon realizing the omission, the father sought assistance from a representative of Child Protection and the Regional Delegation of Education in Zaghouan. They advised him that the matter could only be resolved at the birthplace, which was Tunis.

The governor explained that the citizen then approached the Court of First Instance 1 of Tunis, which declared itself “incompetent” due to territorial issues. He was redirected to the Court of First Instance 2 of Tunis. Faced with lengthy procedures, the citizen turned to the Presidency of the Republic for help.

El Euch assured that the young girl is currently attending school in Zaghouan, having been issued an identity card like other students. She is enrolled in the second year of primary education.
