Tunisia-Zoghlami demands convening of national security council for benefit of women working in agricultural sector

Accidents continue to happen frequently in the agricultural sector, often resulting in casualties. This is largely due to unsafe transportation, despite efforts by the state, associations, and stakeholders to execute preventive measures.

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, President of the Tunisian Association for Democratic Women, Naila Al-Zoghlami,  disclosed that the association carried out a study on the conditions of women operating in the agricultural sector, whether on a daily or seasonal basis or in association with the landlord or landowner. The study yielded several recommendations, with the most notable ones being the need to implement effective measures for the benefit of women. These include guaranteeing safe transportation, equal pay with men, addressing potential diseases resulting from exposure to field chemicals, and providing social security and health services.

Al-Zoghlami stressed that prior measures taken on various occasions failed to meet the expectations of women in the agricultural and maritime sectors, particularly given their vulnerability to fatal accidents.

She called for the urgent convening of a ministerial or national security council to address the specific needs of women in these sectors. The suggested measures should be both immediate and exceptional, including the activation of previously issued circulars, such as those regulating the safe transportation of women in agriculture and the maintenance of roads in this sector.

Al-Zoghlami highlighted the role of associations and civil society in drawing the government’s attention to the urgent necessity for political will and action to address the challenges faced by women in this sector. These challenges include the perils associated with transportation, unequal wages compared to men, and the demanding nature of their work, despite their crucial contribution to providing food for Tunisians.
