Scientists Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov have been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots”.
“Researchers have primarily utilised quantum dots to create coloured light. They believe that in the future quantum dots can contribute to flexible electronics, minuscule sensors, slimmer solar cells, and perhaps encrypted quantum communication,” the organization said.
The academy highlighted that “these smallest components of nanotechnology now spread their light from televisions and LED lamps, and can also guide surgeons when they remove tumor tissue, among many other things … Quantum dots are thus bringing the greatest benefit to humankind.”
