Turkish mine explosion leaves 28 dead

The number of people killed in a coal mine explosion in northern Turkey has risen to 28, the Associated Press reported on Saturday, citing Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez.

The incident, likely caused by firedamp, occurred in the city of Amasra on Friday when 110 workers were underground, according to the minister. The rescuers have brought 58 people to safety since.

After the incident, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced he is canceling a planned visit to Diyarbakir to travel to Amasra.
