England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty issued a statement on Saturday in which he stated that the new coronavirus strain identified in the United Kingdom “can spread more quickly” based on fast-rising incidence rates.
Whitty said that the UK has alerted the World Health Organization and proceeds to analyze the available data. Nevertheless, at the moment it does not appear that the new virus strain is deadlier or immune to the COVID-19 vaccine in use.
“Given this latest development, it is now more vital than ever that the public continue to take action in their area to reduce transmission,” he concluded.
