UK to declare Hizb ut-Tahrir as terrorist group

British Home Secretary James Cleverly sent Monday a draft to the Parliament to declare “international Sunni Islamist political organization Hizb ut-Tahrir” as terrorists beginning from January 19 for considering that it promotes antisemitic actions like the ones carried out by Hamas on October 7.

Should the draft be approved, belonging to the group, making propaganda, recruiting, or any activity promoted by Hizb ut-Tahrir “will be a criminal offence,” with jail sentences of up to 14 years, it was said in the official statement.

On the matter, Cleverly noted that the group is “an antisemitic organization that actively promotes and encourages terrorism … Proscribing this terrorist group will ensure that anyone who belongs to and invites support for them will face consequences. It will curb Hizb ut-Tahrir’s ability to operate as it currently does.” The United Kingdom will join countries like Germany, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Austria that have taken similar actions against the political organization.
