UN chief: Minsk agreements endangered

In addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that if the Russia-Ukraine clashes continue to escalate, the international community “could see a scale and severity of need unseen for many years.”

Characterizing Moscow’s recognition of the Donbas republics as “inconsistent with the UN charter”, Guterres said that the Minsk agreements have managed to survive with the help of “a variety of life support devices.” Nevertheless, he underlined that in the current turn of events, those devices have been “disconnected.”

Guterres finally added that it is necessary to cease hostilities and return to diplomatic negotiations in order to save the people of Ukraine and the world from the “scourge of war.”
