United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed on Friday in a statement that the humanitarian system in Gaza is “facing a total collapse” that could lead to “unimaginable consequences,” affecting over 2 million civilians.
“About 500 trucks per day were crossing into Gaza before the hostilities began. In recent days, an average of only 12 trucks per day have entered, despite needs being far greater than at any time before,” the UN chief stressed, adding that intensified bombing made the situation even worse.
If there is no “immediate and fundamental shift,” the agency will no longer be able to deliver supplies, Guterres warned. He went on to say that the verification system at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip needs to be adjusted, so that “many more trucks” can enter “without delay.”
