UN – Iran: At Least 900 People Reportedly Executed in 2024

According to a statement from the United Nations on January 7, 2025, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, voiced deep concern over the sharp increase in executions in Iran in the past year. The report shows that at least 901 people were executed in 2024, including around 40 in a single week in December.

Türk highlighted the alarming trend, saying, “It is very worrying to see the number of people subjected to the death penalty in Iran rising year after year.” He further urged Iran to put an end to the ongoing wave of executions, stressing the urgent need for reform. The report also noted that at least 853 executions took place in 2023.
