The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reported on Tuesday a total of 17,831 civilian casualties in Ukraine since the start of Russia’s armed attack on February 24. This includes 6,884 killed and 10,947 injured.
According to the OHCHR, most of these casualties were caused by explosive weapons with wide-area effects, including artillery shelling, multiple-launch rocket systems, missiles, and air strikes.
The OHCHR believes that the actual number of casualties is likely higher, as receiving information from some areas where intense hostilities have occurred was delayed, and many reports are still awaiting corroboration. This includes the Donetsk region, Kharkiv region, and Luhansk region.
