UN Security Council To Discuss Palestine Recognition on Monday

The United Nations Security Council will convene today to deliberate on Palestine’s application for full membership in the UN.

Palestine, which has held non-member observer status since 2012, seeks to elevate its status to that of a full-fledged UN member state. Approximately 140 of the UN’s 193 member states already recognize Palestine as a state.

According to the UN, the Council may decide to refer the matter to its standing Committee on the Admission of New Members. If referred, the Committee would deliberate and possibly recommend admission.

However, the process requires the agreement of at least nine of the Council’s 15 members, and the veto applies.

If the Council doesn’t recommend admission, it must submit a report to the General Assembly, which can ask for reconsideration. The admission of a new member in the General Assembly requires a two-thirds majority vote.
