The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) stated on Tuesday that war crimes may have been perpetrated during Israel’s recent operation in which four hostages held by Hamas were rescued. “Hundreds of Palestinians, many of them civilians, were reportedly killed and injured,” OHCHR spokesperson Jeremy Laurence said. According to the Gazan Health Ministry, 283 people were killed and 814 injured in the raid.
“Furthermore, by holding hostages in such densely populated areas, the armed groups doing so are putting the lives of Palestinian civilians, as well as the hostages themselves, at added risk from the hostilities. All these actions, by both parties, may amount to war crimes,” Laurence said.
