UN to hold Russia accountable for reparations

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted 94-14 on Monday in favor of a resolution that will hold Russia accountable for its violations of international law, calling on the latter, among other things, to pay for reparations in Ukraine. Meanwhile, 73 members abstained from voting.

The resolution draft identifies the need for “an international mechanism for reparation for damage, loss or injury” and recommends that the UNGA members, in cooperation with Ukraine, form an “international register,” where claims and information on damages, loss or injury will be recorded.

On the other hand, Moscow rejected the resolution, with Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya labeling it as “an insignificant attempt to legalize what is not legalized from the point of view of international law.”
