UNSMIL calls on Libyan politicians to agree on clear electoral path

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya on Sunday called on the Libyan leaders to agree on a clear electoral path and a timetable for the elections, and to attain a consensus on forming a new unified government that will move the country towards the elections, cautioning that “delay in action now will deepen the division, expose Libya to various risks that threaten the lives of people in Libya, and undermine regional stability.”

In a statement posted on its Facebook page on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of Libya’s independence, the mission voiced its “commitment to facilitating the Libyan-Libyan dialogue,” but said, “The responsibility lies with the Libyan parties to demonstrate their full commitment to achieving national unity, peace and security by engaging positively with the efforts UN envoy Abdullah Batili)).

In its statement, the UNSMI urged Libyan politicians to “put the demands of the people in Libya at the top of their priorities, put them ahead of factional interests, and name their representatives for the preparatory meeting without delay.”
