US House passes act requiring citizenship proof when voting

House Republicans approved an election security act on Wednesday requiring proof of United States citizenship for voter registration in federal elections, even though non-citizen voting in federal elections is already illegal.

The House of Representatives voted 221-198 in favor of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, requiring those registering to vote to provide documentary proof of citizenship. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for removing noncitizens from federal voter registration rolls.
