Police announced more victims were feared on White Island, where the volcano erupted at about 2:11 p.m. (0111 GMT), blowing a plume of ash thousands of feet into the air.
The prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, who was en route to the nearby coastal town of Whakatāne on Monday evening, said the situation was “significant and evolving”.
On Twitter, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australians had been affected by the eruption and the government was trying to learn more. Twenty four Australians were on White Island when the volcano erupted, Australian media said.
