WH: UN ceasefire call not binding but carries great weight

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday that the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is not binding but emphasised it still “carries great weight.”

Still, she stressed that the “only pathway” to achieve a ceasefire is negotiating the release of hostages held by Hamas. Jean-Pierre pointed out that reaching an agreement on hostages and a ceasefire as soon as possible is particularly important because the humanitarian situation in Gaza is “dire.”
