The Delta variant of Covid-19, first identified in India, has altered how the virus is spreading, and the measures governments have to take to stop it. Tunisia has reported six cases of the variant.
Scientists have cautioned that the data implies the delta variant is approximately 60% more transmissible than the “alpha” variant (previously known as the U.K. or Kent variant which was itself much more transmissible than the original version of the virus) and is more likely to lead to hospitalizations.
WHO officials said there were reports that the delta variant additionally causes more severe symptoms, but that more research is needed to confirm those conclusions.
There is some emerging evidence implying that the symptoms for the new variant are a little different to the “classic” coronavirus symptoms.
Symptoms for the new variant include headaches, a sore throat, and a runny nose.
