Who is Chokri Hamouda, new director of Central Pharmacy of Tunisia?

Chokri Hamouda, a university hospital professor of medicine, was designated President and CEO of the Central Pharmacy of Tunisia by decree No. 2024-657, dated December 16, 2024.

A look back at the remarkable career of this internationally renowned expert.

A rich academic and professional career
A University of Tunis El Manar graduate, Chokri Hamouda received his doctorate in medicine in 1991, specializing in emergency medicine and intensive care. He then enriched his knowledge with three masters in emergency medicine, clinical toxicology, and occupational health and safety. His academic career shows his passion for excellence and innovation in health.

For more than 16 years, he worked at the Center for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine in Tunis, laying the foundations of his expertise in emergency medical interventions. From 2007 to 2016, he worked at Rabta University Hospital, while heading the emergency department at Charles Nicolle Hospital from 2016 to 2018.

Commitment to public health management
In 2019, he was appointed Director General at the Ministry of Public Health. In this position, he supervised key initiatives to strengthen the health system in Tunisia. Between 2020 and 2024, he headed the National Authority for Health Assessment and Accreditation, where he consolidated quality standards for medical care across the country.

His expertise was not limited to Tunisia. As a senior consultant for the Saudi Ministry of Health and a member of the World Health Organization, he contributed to international projects.

International recognition
Chokri Hamouda has also shone on the international stage. He was Secretary General of the Middle East Transplant Coordinators Organization, teaching advanced practices of organ donation and retrieval in several countries, including Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. His dedication earned him the prestigious Sadok Besrour Prize in 2017 for his outstanding contribution to the development and transfer of medical knowledge in Tunisia.

A strategic vision for the Central Pharmacy
As the new CEO of Central Pharmacy, Chokri Hamouda will confront major challenges, including the supply of essential medicines and the management of resources in a tense economic context.

His appointment reflects the Tunisian government’s desire to rely on competent profiles to modernize and improve the public health sector.
