It is “very unlikely” the world will be able to eradicate the coronavirus under current circumstances, the World Health Organization warned on Friday.
“In our current situation, it is very unlikely that we can eradicate or eliminate this virus. We’ve seen countries that have managed to get to zero or almost zero re-import virus from outside, so there’s always a risk,” executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Programme Dr. Mike Ryan announced at a press conference.
Dr. Ryan pointed out the organization is concerned about “large clusters of cases that could occur in association with super spreading events, events in which large crowds gather” which he compared to “forest fires” – “easy to see but very difficult to put out.”
