World’s largest volcano erupts first time since 1984

Hawaii has been placed on ‘warning’ alert after the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, erupted on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The volcano hadn’t erupted since 1984 and residents were told to stay informed through the country’s defense information center.

The USGS confirmed that the eruption is in its early stages and the flow has been “contained within the summit area and are not threatening downslope communities.” Wind plays an important factor in how the lava flows so the situation could change rapidly.
