4.9° earthquake hits Morocco

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 hit today, Tuesday, at 8 a.m., 37 minutes and 52 seconds in the morning, Moroccan time, impacting several localities in the provinces of Azilal and Beni Mellal in Morocco. Fortunately, there were no reported material losses, but the earthquake did cause a state of general panic within the population.

A local official in Azilal province reported, “Several residents in the Ait M’hamed community felt the earthquake, and many of them ran from their houses for fear of more powerful responses.” Just a few hours earlier, the ground had also shaken beneath the feet of the residents of the Beni Mellal-Khénifra region.

According to an online earthquake tracking service, the tremor measured 4.9 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the earthquake was located on the outskirts of Beni Mellal, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
