Libya: Presidential election scheduled for Friday postponed

Libyan authorities confirmed on Wednesday that the presidential election planned for Friday, December 24, 2021 will not take place. According to reports from Libyan media outlets, parliament has not set a new date for the ballot, though the electoral commission has recommended that it be held on January 24, if conditions are met.

The United Nations hoped that the elections would permit Libya to turn the page on a decade of chaos and territorial division between the west and east of the country since the fall of  Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
