AFCON 2024: Gabaski eliminates Egypt, DR Congo in quarter-finals (videos)

It’s a habit among the Pharaohs at the AFCON and it was the penalties which decided the two groups in the fourth round of 16 of the AFCON, played at the Stade Laurent Pokou (20,000 seats) in San Pedro.

DR Congo, although in numerical superiority after the red card against Mohamed Hamdi (97′ – video), discovered resources to eliminate Egypt with a score of (1-1, 8-7 TAB). Meschack Elia (38′ – video) opened the scoring for the Congolese before the equalizer from the penalty spot by Mostafa Mohamed (45+1′ – video).

The Congolese Leopards encountered a significant challenge in aiming to redeem themselves after having bitterly regretted their absence at AFCON 2022 particularly since they have not won any of their last 6 matches in all competitions and have only registered ‘only one victory in their last 10 clashes.

While 4 of their last 7 AFCON knockout matches finished in penalty shootouts, the Egyptians failed to gain a clearer result after their 3 straight draws, knowing that their last setback against the Congolese dates back to the 1974 edition.

The Congolese do not plan to halt there and have a real chance against a Guinean team which is not at the top of its form after having eliminated Equatorial Guinea earlier in the evening.
