The number of fatalities from Hurricane Ian in the United States has climbed to at least 52, with 47 deaths so far confirmed in Florida and four in North Carolina, according to an AP tally. Most deaths were attributed to drowning.
At least 1,000 people have been saved from the hurricane in southwestern Florida thanks to organized rescue operations, National Guard head Daniel Hokanson said. Rescuers will continue their search for survivors, with the death toll expected to rise further.
