At least 129 people, including two police officers, were killed on Sunday after a riot broke out at a football match. Fights between supporters of Persebaya Surabaya and Arema Malang escalated into a clash with police, which used tear gas.
According to media reports, Arema Malang supporters stormed the pitch after their team lost the game 3-2, prompting a police response. The use of tear gas caused panic, with most fatalities caused by a resulting stampede. East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta said some 300 people were taken to hospital, with around 180 injured. The death toll could rise as some hospitalized people were admitted with severe injuries, he added.
