Australia is stepping up its quest for justice after the Israeli army’s deadly strike in Gaza which killed seven aid workers, including an Australian citizen. The government has designated Mark Binskin, former head of the Australian Air Force, to lead a rigorous inquiry into the tragic events of April 1, which saw the disappearance of Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, a 43-year-old Australian, among six other members of the NGO World Central Kitchen (WCK).
Confronted with global outrage and “serious errors” admitted by the IDF, which led to the dismissal of two officers, Australia is calling for greater accountability. Penny Wong, Australian Foreign Minister, voiced her frustration with Israeli explanations which she found “insufficient” and emphasised the importance of “transparency” in the investigation carried out jointly with Israel.
The appointment of Mark Binskin as special advisor seeks to guarantee the accountability of all actors involved in this incident. The Australian minister said she expected Israel’s engagement to facilitate truth and justice.
The Australian government is also considering further investigations if required, strengthening WCK chief Jose Andres’ call for a “much more in-depth” and “independent” investigation, branding the strike as “unforgivable”.
