United States President-elect Joe Biden nominated retired Army General Lloyd Austin as the defence secretary in his government, calling him as “a true and tested soldier and leader” and “the definition of a patriot.”
In an op-ed titled “Why I Chose Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense,” published by The Atlantic on Tuesday, Biden penned that, like him, Austin believes that the US “is strongest when we lead not only with the example of our power, but with the power of our example.”
“Moreover, we need leaders like Lloyd Austin who understand that our military is only one instrument of our national security.” According to Biden, he and Austin both think that “diplomats and development experts” should “lead our foreign policy, using force only as our last resort.”
