European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell told a meeting of G7 foreign ministers on Thursday that the current tensions between Israel and Iran risk escalating into a conflict. While he repeated that the EU will impose additional sanctions on Iran, he also warned Israel not to take further action that could worsen the situation.
“I don’t want to exaggerate but we are on the edge of a war, a regional war in the Middle East, which will be sending shockwaves to the rest of the world, and in particular to Europe. So stop it,” he said, addressing Israel. “Take care of the Gazan people. Ceasefire. Humanitarian support. Freedom of hostages. This is the call that the leaders from the European Union launched yesterday.”
