Ennahdha condemns arrest of its leader Sahbi Atig

As expected, Ennahdha movement went up to the front, on Saturday, to defend one of its prominent leaders, Sahbi Atig as well as other activists and political personalities who are facing justice.

In a statement released Saturday, Ennahdha movement urged authorities to treat all Tunisian citizens on equal footing, ensure a fair trial and warns against making use of the judiciary in political battles.

Attig was arrested, Saturday, by the Border Police at the Tunis-Carthage International Airport before boarding for Turkey where he was expected to take part in a seminar, his wife Zeineb Mraihi said.

Officers told him that “he was the subject of an arrest warrant.”

Ennahdha sees it as an orchestrated campaign to neutralize opposition leaders.

The Public Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance of Ariana ordered the Judicial Police to arrest the former leader of Ennahdha parliamentary group.

The statement condemned the “fake accusations brought against Atig” claiming that “they were made up by a person who has already lodged several defamatory complaints against Atig.”

His wife was a little more specific: She mentions a person who claims to have stolen 1.5 million dinars from the former deputy. She claimed that the authorities had refused to reveal the identity of the alleged burglar…
