Former King of Spain, Juan Carlos I has settled his tax debt of nearly €8 million by securing the second payment of €4.395 million, including rates and surcharges, his lawyer Javier Sanchez-Junco declared on Friday.
Juan Carlos, who reigned Spain from 1975 to 2014, is facing corruption charges with the country’s Supreme Court over his connections to many business ventures in the Gulf countries, most prominently the construction of the Haramain high-speed railway in Saudi Arabia, and over the funds, he used to pay for his personal expenses. The controversy forced the former king to leave the country, first for the Dominican Republic, and eventually for the United Arab Emirates.
