Danish Crown Prince Frederik officially was crowned new king taking on the title of King Frederik X on Sunday. This followed the formal abdication of the throne by his mother, Queen Margrethe II, who, at 83 years old, is the longest-serving female monarch in Denmark’s history.
The nation commemorated the new monarch and large crowds gathered in the streets of Copenhagen to welcome King Frederik X. The Australian-born Crown Princess Mary, married to the new king, will now be known as Queen Mary. The royal couple has four children, and their 18-year-old son, Prince Christian, assumes the position of crown prince, becoming the first in line to succeed his father. The transition marks a significant moment for Europe’s oldest monarchy.
