Gaps in COVID monitoring could lead to new variant – WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned Friday that a fresh COVID-19 variant of concern could emerge.

He emphasized that gaps in surveillance, testing, sequencing, and vaccination against COVID-19 remain propitious for “the perfect conditions for a new variant of concern to emerge.”

“We are much closer to being able to say that the emergency phase of the pandemic is over, but we’re not there yet,” Tedros told a press conference.
